South Africa Introduces New Points-Based Immigration System: What You Need to Know

In a significant overhaul of its work visa system, South Africa has introduced a new points-based immigration framework, effective October 9, 2024. This innovative approach, announced by Minister of Home Affairs Dr L.A. Schreiber, aims to streamline and standardize the work visa application process for both general work visas and critical skills work visas.

How the New System Works

Applicants must accumulate a minimum of 100 points across various categories to qualify for a work visa. The system evaluates candidates based on the following criteria:

Occupation (Up to 100 points):

·       100 points awarded if your occupation is on the critical skills list

Qualifications (Up to 50 points):

·       50 points for NQF levels 9 and 10

·       30 points for NQF levels 7 and 8

Employment Offer (Mandatory):

·       50 points for offers above R976,194 gross per annum

·       20 points for offers between R650,796 and R976,194 gross per annum

Work Experience:

·       30 points for 10+ years of experience

·       20 points for 5-10 years of experience

Additional Bonus Points:

·       20 points for offers from Trusted Employers

·       10 points for proficiency in at least one official South African language

Visa Categories and Requirements

The type of visa issued depends on how applicants achieve their 100 points:

  1. Critical Skills Work Visa: Awarded if the 100-point threshold is reached through an occupation on the critical skills list.

  2. General Work Visa: Granted if the 100 points are accumulated through a combination of other criteria.

Important: All applicants must still meet standard visa requirements, including:

·       Police clearance

·       Medical report

·       Other prescribed documentation

What This Means for Prospective Immigrants

This new system provides a clear, objective framework for qualifying for a South African work visa. It particularly favours:

·       Highly skilled professionals in critical sectors

·       Individuals with advanced qualifications

·       Experienced professionals

·       Well-compensated positions

·       Those with language skills in South African official languages
