Unpacking the latest Critical Skills List

On October 3, 2023, the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa unveiled its updated Critical Skills List, bringing significant changes to the immigration landscape for skilled professionals seeking to work in the country. This latest iteration of the list, comprising 142 skilled positions, introduces several noteworthy amendments aimed at streamlining and expediting the visa application process for individuals possessing specific expertise. Here, we break down the key updates and what they mean for prospective immigrants.

Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses Included

One of the most notable changes is the inclusion of veterinarians and veterinary nurses in the Critical Skills List. These professionals play a vital role in the health and well-being of animals.

To qualify for a critical skills work visa, veterinarians must hold either a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (NQF level 8) or a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (NQF level 8), with these qualifications must be recognized by the relevant professional body or council.

Similarly, veterinary nurses must possess a national diploma of veterinary nursing (NQF level 6) that is also recognized by the relevant authorities.

Candidate Engineers Now Eligible

In a significant change, candidate engineers who are registered with the relevant recognized professional body now qualify for critical skills work visas. This update opens doors for engineers looking to contribute their expertise to South Africa's workforce. However, candidates in these occupations must still meet all other requirements and work under the supervision of a qualified professional where applicable and will only be eligible to apply for permanent residence once they can prove 5 years post qualification experience.

Simplified Visa Process for University Lecturers

University lecturers, an existing occupation on the Critical Skills List, will no longer require approval from a professional board. Instead, they need to obtain a letter of endorsement from the Dean, Head of Faculty or School, or University Registrar.

Employer Requirements Remain

It's important to highlight that a critical skills visa application still necessitates an offer of employment from employers who are verifiable and in good standing with the Department of Employment and Labour. This requirement ensures that individuals with the specified skills are genuinely needed in the South African job market.

Those who meet these revised requirements and obtain a Critical skills Work Visa are immediately eligible for Permanent residence provided they can prove relevant 5 years post qualification experience.
